Gowdy Jr. enjoyed an illustrious 46-year career in sports broadcasting, earning 16 National and 27 Regional Emmy Awards. He spent 29 years at ABC Sports, serving as Senior Coordinating Producer for ABC’s Wide World of Sports, the longest-running and most celebrated anthology show in television sports history. Gowdy produced three World Series, including the critically acclaimed Bay Area “earthquake” Series, and played key roles in producing coverage of four Olympic Games, Super Bowl pregame, halftime, and postgame shows, 14 Kentucky Derbies, and 12 Triple Crown races. A true innovator, he pioneered the use of live wireless jockey microphones and helmet cameras, earning eight Eclipse Awards for Thoroughbred Racing coverage. His credits also include 18 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, including landmark coverage of the Nancy Kerrigan–Tonya Harding saga, 11 World Figure Skating Championships, and 16 Little League World Series. In 2005, Gowdy embraced a new challenge by launching SNY, the premier regional sports network. As Senior Vice President and Executive Producer for 17 years, he oversaw all production, talent, and original programming, elevating Emmy Award-winning coverage of the Mets, Jets, UConn, and Big East sports. He is credited with assembling one of the most acclaimed baseball broadcast teams in television, establishing SNY as the national standard for regional sports coverage.
