Greg, who passed away earlier this year, was one of the most well respected personalities in the business. It all began in 1973 when Greg got his start at NBC WMAQ-TV in Chicago, his amazing career spanned over 50 years.
He covered everything from Major League Baseball to the NBA to the NFL, the Summer and Winter Olympic games, World Figure Skating Championships, the Daytona 500 and hosted Wimbledon for NBC Sports to name a few.
Prior to returning to the booth in 2006, Gumbel successfully completed his second season as the host of the CBS’ Emmy award winning show “The NFL Today.” He formerly hosted “The NFL Today” on CBS from 1990-93 and “The NFL on NBC.” Gumbel was also the lead play-by-play announcer for CBS Sports’ coverage of the NFL from 1998 to 2003. In that capacity, he called the thrilling action at Super Bowl XXXVIII in Houston and Super Bowl XXXV in Tampa. He was the first network broadcaster to both call play-by-play and host the Super Bowl. He hosted Super Bowl XXVI in Minneapolis, Super Bowl XXX in Tempe and Super Bowl XXXII in San Diego.
For 25 consecutive seasons Greg guided viewers through March Madness as the CBS host of the NCAA Men’s basketball championship.
When Greg wasn’t on the air, he pursued his passion for speaking and delivered countless inspirational keynote speeches to groups and charity organizations all over the world.
He was a three time Emmy award winner, and the 2007 recipient of the prestigious Pat Summerall Award for excellence in sports broadcasting. Greg was very active in charitable work. He served 12 years as a member of the March of Dimes National Board of Trustees and an additional 13 years as Special Advisor to the President of the March of Dimes. Greg was honored to be a member of the St Jude’s Children’s Hospital Sports Council. He completed the 10 year term as a member of the Board of Regents at his alma mater, Loras College. He then was unanimously elected to Regent Emeritus status by the Board.
